Help mid-career hires settle in faster: fill the gap with their previous job through the daily report
Mid-career hires, supposedly ready to perform, stumble because differences in methods from their previous job and unspoken rules are invisible. How to make the gap visible early through the report and support a smooth ramp-up.
The distinct reason mid-career hires stumble
Even with ample skill, mid-career hires stumble on differences in method from their previous job and the company's unspoken rules. Unlike new graduates, seen as 'they should be able to,' they find it hard to voice their confusion and tend to carry the gap alone.
Surface the gap early in the report
Have them write in the report's C (reflection) the 'points that confused me, different from my previous job,' and a gap even they barely noticed becomes words. Once what confuses them is visible, the manager can supplement on target and the mismatch surfaces early.
Speed up the alignment loop
By the manager responding early to the gaps that surface, you can correct them before misunderstanding sets. Align the difference between the previous job's way and this company's way without blame. The faster you run this loop early in the ramp-up, the shorter the time to settle in.
Make it a bridge that uses their previous experience
A mid-career hire's value lies in the experience built at their previous job. If you can draw out 'this is how we did it before' through the report, it becomes an asset brought into the new workplace. The report both fills the gap and becomes a place to translate and use experience.
